The Los Angeles chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its successful series of monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall in Hollywood. Our friends at The Los Angeles Film School are hosting us at their state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the city, conveniently located near the corner of Sunset & Vine.
This "grassroots" community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals and to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film (and film financing in particular). The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests for the evening!
IIFF's one-of-a-kind mission is to sustainably expand the scope & appeal of film financing, and to do so for the benefit of the public at large. – Randy Mendelsohn, Esq. (topic): Mr. Mendelsohn is President/CEO at financing boutique Atomic Finance & Capital as well as the Mendelsohn Law Office, a full-service transactional entertainment law firm that specializes in high-level, complex entertainment, banking, business and international law with a particular emphasis on motion picture and television finance, production, distribution and talent agreements. Throughout his legal career, Mr. Mendelsohn has developed a practice specializing in the structuring, negotiating, strategizing and documenting of all types of transactions pertaining to the entertainment industry on behalf of financiers, distributors (both foreign and domestic), television broadcasters, production companies, foreign sales companies, management companies, actors, rights holders, writers, directors and producers in the US and Europe. Mr. Mendelsohn has formed Atomic Finance & Capital to make use of his vast resources and relationships in a non-legal context with applications inside and outside of the entertainment business. With the help of strategic partners, he has arranged financing for various business projects including projects related to the entertainment business (motion picture and television production, acquisition and prints and advertisements for theatrical release) and others outside of the entertainment business (hospitals, schools, sports venues, casinos and the construction of various real estate projects). – Michael Youn (topic): Mr. Youn is currently the Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development at Lionsgate Entertainment, where he has a broad portfolio that covers various film and business development initiatives, evaluating film and library acquisitions, next-generation technology, studio green-lights, and the distribution and marketing of Lionsgate films. Previously, Mr. Youn was an investment banker with UBS, specializing in derivatives trading. He also worked briefly at Zacks Investment Research as a media and entertainment analyst, tracking sector trends and outlooks. Mr. Youn earned his MBA from the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds a Master's Degree from Northwestern University, another Master's from DePaul University, and a BA from Northwestern University. »
– John W. Cones, Esq. (topic): Mr. Cones is a leading securities/entertainment attorney who has practiced in Los Angeles and area for eighteen years, advising independent feature film producers and others on matters relating to investor financing of feature films and other entertainment projects. He has prepared or participated in the preparation of business plans and/or the required securities disclosure documents, along with Blue Sky compliance, for more than 250 such offerings during his 18-year securities law career, including public and private production-money offerings for feature films, television pilots, documentaries, infomercials, live stage plays and Internet companies. Mr. Cones' clients have produced or distributed some 50 feature and documentary films with funds raised through such offerings. Other such offerings have been conducted for development, packaging and completion funding. In a broader sense, Mr. Cones also works with entrepreneurs on the investor financing of business startups. He has lectured more than 350 times to an aggregate audience of approximately 5,400 on topics relating to film finance and distribution for the American Film Institute (AFI), the UCLA graduate-level Independent Producers Program, UCLA Extension, the USC Cinema/TV School, the USC Cinema/TV Alumni Association, IFP/West, American University (Washington, DC), the Nashville Bar Association, Cal Western School of Law, the University of Texas Entertainment Law Institute, North Carolina School of the Arts, California Lawyers for the Arts, Columbia College Hollywood and other film industry organizations. In addition to several articles, Mr. Cones has authored six books on those same topics including "Introduction to the Film Industry: A Guide for Students, Filmmakers and Scholars", "Dictionary of Film Finance and Distribution: A Guide for Independent Filmmakers", "Film Industry Contracts", "43 Ways to Finance Your Film", "The Feature Film Distribution Deal" and "Hollywood Wars". He also hosts an online discussion forum about investor financing of entertainment projects and maintains a website for his law practice. Mr. Cones is a member of the California and Texas Bar Associations. He resides in Westlake Village, CA. »
– Josh Lederer (topic): Mr. Lederer is Managing Director at Fallbrook Capital Corporation, where his responsibilities include the marketing of tax credit investments to institutional investors with a specialty in state historic and film credits. Since joining Fallbrook Capital in 2004, he has helped structure dozens of tax credit transactions representing more than $50M of investments. Mr. Lederer has worked on films made in Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Missouri, collaborating with large Hollywood studios, small independent production companies and other clients to help maximize the funds they receive in return for state motion picture tax incentives. He has a thorough understanding of domestic film tax incentive programs and can help production companies find the location that is right for their specific production based on budget, crew and necessary outdoor shots (e.g., desert, beach, snow). Mr. Lederer graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz. »
– Elsa Ramo, Esq. (topic): Ms. Ramo is an entertainment attorney, representing many corporate clients as well as individual writers, directors, and producers in the entertainment industry. She graduated from University of San Diego School of Law, and began her career at Davis Dixon Kirby LLP as an associate establishing their Los Angeles Office. Ms. Ramo founded her own firm in 2005 on the Universal Studios backlot when approached by several clients who wished for her to handle their independent productions. Since then, her practice has successfully grown and is currently located in Beverly Hills. Ms. Ramo's specialties span the spectrum of entertainment legal needs: Corporate/Entity Representation, Contract Negotiation, Review and Drafting, Producer/Writer Representative Services, Trademark and Copyright filing and litigation, and Corporate Formations, Acquisition, and Mergers. The focus of her practice is to be a legal resource to film financiers, producers and other creative individuals in the film, music and television industries. – Roman Kopelevich (topic): Mr. Kopelevich is Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Acquisitions at financing, production and international sales company Bleiberg Entertainment. He oversees Bleiberg's international sales slate and handles sales operations for its film library in all territories worldwide as well as North America. These include the international sensation "The Band's Visit" which won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, Munich Film Festival, Karlovy Vary, Copenhagen and Jerusalem Film Festivals; as well as "He Was a Quiet Man" starring Christian Slater, Elisha Cuthbert and William Macy; "Adam Resurrected" directed by Paul Schrader and starring Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe; "Lonesome Jim" starring Casey Affleck and Liv Tyler; "One Last Dance" starring Harvey Keitel; "Heckler" starring Jamie Kennedy and "Stephanie Daley" starring the Oscar winners Tilda Swinton and Timothy Hutton. Before that, Mr. Kopelevich served as Director of Distribution Services for Media 8 Entertainment, where he handled foreign rights sales and distribution focusing on international theatrical, video/DVD and television distributors in Europe, South Asia, Latin America and the Middle East for films including the Oscar winner "Monster" starring Charlize Theron, "Upside of Anger" starring Kevin Costner, "Havoc" starring Anne Hathaway, "Man About Town" starring Ben Affleck, and "Running Scared" starring Paul Walker. Prior to Media 8, Mr. Kopelevich was Vice President of Entertainment Sales and Marketing at Filmbazaar.com. As a founding partner, he conceptualized, developed and launched the website and created and executed global marketing activities as well as sales campaigns to sell services to independent foreign sales companies and international distributors. Additionally, he spearheaded development of strategic outreach programs and oversaw campaigns to secure industry partnerships and led business trips to China, Hong Kong and Italy. Before joining Filmbazaar, Mr. Kopelevich worked for two years as Director of Sales at Fox International Home Entertainment, overseeing sales of Fox theatrical and straight-to-video titles. He began his career at New World Entertainment in 1992, where he handled video and television sales for one of the largest independent film libraries. »
– Wayne Repich (topic): Mr. Repich's success during his 20+ year career has allowed him access into the entertainment industry, through his many clients in that field. Regularly a resource and advisor to them, he is now focusing on this area for future professional endeavors. Mr. Repich is an expert in real estate and finance. He is licensed in California as a Real Estate Broker and General Contractor, and in Nevada as a Real Estate Broker-Salesperson. For decades, Mr. Repich has utilized his professional skills in many areas of real estate, including sales, development and finance. He has founded several mortgage banking companies, and was a Partner in Vanguard Financial Ltd. since its inception in 1995. Mr. Repich was responsible for individual and subdivision loans, commercial purchase transactions, financing for selective builders and developers, and institutional and private money transactions. He has overseen staff selection, development and training. He has arranged, and/or brokered through his offices over 3,000 mortgage loans.
